Over £700 was raised during May’s Pie & ale evening at the Grand Hotel for the Dartmoor Search & Rescue Team Ashburton. Their co-founder, Alec Collyer MBE, who has celebrated over 42 years with the organisation, gave a detailed account of the day to day challenges they face, searching for lost, missing, injured and vulnerable people throughout the wide geographical area.
The team of committed and dedicated volunteers provide additional resources alongside the emergency services. Said Alec; ‘On behalf of our team, I would like to thank you and your TBF members for the very kind donation for which we are very grateful.
The donation will be put to very good use making sure the team is fully trained and properly equipped to deal with the incidents on land and in the water that we are frequently called upon by the Police and other emergency services to cover.
As you may know we are having to replace a number of our VHF radios due to a change in the licensed radio spectrum that means they can’t be reprogrammed on to the new frequencies, which is why your donation is much appreciated and will be put to very good use.
We currently have around 60 fully qualified volunteers who are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to assist those in need. On top of the callouts we train weekly whatever the weather to keep our skills up to date, do our own fundraising and support events such as Ten Tors and the Dartmoor Classic.”
